The boys got off the bus as was the new norm with Red and upon entering their temporary residence and not finding their mother decided to go see about her at their father’s apartment. Red had offered to follow but Box quite certain that he was capable of handling every situation decided that Red didn’t need to go with them. The building was dead silent, not a radio playing or a cartoon loud in the background on any TV, as they walked up the stairs, they hadn’t even heard any movement inside their home. Box originally thought that maybe his mother and father were out trying to fix everything broken with their relationship. As they walked into the apartment however, the atmosphere was dense with struggle and pain. Immediately Box saw all the dishes that had been left on the table. Noticed that his mother’s shoes were out but not on and knowing that she wasn’t the type to leave the house in disarray Box immediately assumed that she wasn’t in good shape and began walking to the back of the house. No signs of his father showing at all until he hit the hallway near the bedrooms and bathrooms. Seeing blood on the floor and their father’s feet out the bathroom door Box instructed Gene to go clean up the front room just in case they couldn’t get their mother out of bed. As soon as Gene turned to go do as told, Box immediately took the largest strides he’d ever taken to get to his mother.

With blood all over them both as he got to the door tears began racing to Box’s eyes. He saw blood encompassing the entire bathroom. His mother laying on his father’s chest, what he hadn’t been able to figure out was which of the two of them were hurt, not at first glance. Falling to his knees Box crawled passed his father’s feet, being sure to kick his legs on the way to his mother. Placing a hand on Rose’s blood streaked cheek, Box began calling for her, “Mama…” but she still never answered. Kicking his father again he allowed the tears to flow that he had been holding back, “Mama, mama, please Ma… Even if you’re so hurt you can’t move please Ma. Me and Gene need you Mama, please…”. Just as Box began putting up his emotions coming to his feet, he began yelling stomping on Eugene’s genitals, “Get the fuck up ignorant bitch!”. As he stomped Box noticed Eugene never batted an eye.

“Amell…” Rose’s voice cracked, never opening an eye she grabbed his leg as it landed on Eugene’s genitals again. “I’m alive…That’s not my blood.” That one statement and the touch of her hand immediately stopped him in his tracks. Reaching down his hand to her Rose grabbed it, revealing the effects of the last 24 hours of her life immediately. Box knowing how his father liked to treat his mother, and that they’d begged her to take the gun that their grandmother had given her, he summed up the rest on his own in his mind.
